Ex-hihilo was an ambitious project that I have had many reservations about that ultimately negatively effected how I worked on the Public Mkaing projects. I will make a number of clarifications before I begin.
A forced collaborative project at MA level is a questionable learning tool or so I thought as I assumed most people in thegroup through experience would have had these type of projects in past educations - obviously this was a massive misunderstanding on my behalf. What I do continue to stand by is my own working with in the group.
Our initial night in Allenheads was an exciting night of critical head bashing, artistic differences and general ganging up on certain people. All in good spirits but it may have been a tough night for some. For myself it was clear this collaboration, although having legs, needed a lot of guidance and a louder voice than all to guide it. I assumed this to be Pete.
However In the morning we meant with Alan and it became clear that we were far from a concrete idea. He however steered the group into an idea that we soon agreed on. To me it felt a lot of this had already been decided. I understand and respect the fact that Alan and Helen need to keep a standard within Allenheads Contemporary but for us, as students not to be giving the possibility of failing is doing us a dis-service.
From the start of the project I felt that I was more experienced in the project managing of this and being thruthful I felt like i could not give the time to a project that needed to deal with 7 indivudal (including Alan) when I qm involced in a number of other projects. I know this is not a conducive vewpoint to team building and goes against a lot of the friendships that have built up over the course. I would like to note here Pete took a lot on his shoulders and he should be commended for it, i couldn't do it. and again being totally honest I feel the project was the better of is as It eould have been one more loud voice in the room. I would also like to point out the work of Nick Cooke. From the outset no job descriptions where given and roles where loose; except Nick. He clearly stated at the start what he was going and willing to do and we all agreed. I feel like there was a lot of hostility towards him later in the project as the pressure mounted but as it was clearly stated from the start what he would do I feel like this was somewhat unjustified.
